Famous Medieval Castles - The Chateau Galliard
The Chateau Galliard was one of the finest of all medieval castles. Located on a high hill overlooking the Seine about twenty miles from Rouen. Built by Richard the Lion hearted within a twelvemonth (1197-1198 AD) and by him called Saucy Castle. It was captured a few years later by the French king Philip Augustus and was dismantled early in the seventeenth century. The castle consisted of three distinct series of fortifications, besides the keep which in this case was merely a strong tower.

The Tower of London is the most famous castle in England. The Tower of London is closely associated with William the Conqueror who invaded and conquered England in 1066. William the Conqueror initially built a wooden Motte and Bailey castle and the famous, fortified, stone White Tower, which replaced the original timber Motte and Bailey castle, was completed in 1097. There are a total of 21 different towers which form the Tower of London castle complex. The Tower of London is notorious for the bloody executions, imprisonment and torture of the prisoners who were incarcerated in this famous castle of the Middle Ages. Famous Medieval Castles - Windsor Castle
Windsor is the oldest and largest castle which can boast continuous occupation for over 900 years. Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal family of England regard Windsor Castle as their home. William the Conqueror chose the site of Windsor Castle which was used by the Saxon Kings of the Dark Ages. Windsor Castle contains many dungeons which were occupied by many famous prisoners.

Warwick Castle has a chequered history and started as a Wooden Motte and Bailey castle built by William the Conqueror eventually constructed as a massive stone fortress. The wooden castle was replaced by a fortified stone castle in 1260. The bloody history of Warwick Castle is steeped in treachery, murder and mystery. Famous historical figures and events feature in the history of Warwick Castle including William the Conqueror, the Wars of the Roses, Lady Jane Grey, the Civil War and the Age of Chivalry with Knights and tournaments.

Famous Medieval Castles - Leeds Castle
William the Conqueror used enforced Anglo-Saxon labour for work on the construction of Leeds Castle. The original wooden castle was replaced by a fortified stone castle in 1119. An important feature of Leeds Castle is its access to the River Len. Leeds Castle occupies three islands surrounded by an artificial lake. King Henry VIII converted Leeds Castle into a Royal Palace but retained the defences due to the possible risk of invasion from Spain or France.

The building of Caernarvon Castle in Wales was started in 1283 by the English King Edward I (1272-1307). King Edward employed the services of an architect and master builder called Master James of St George to build Caernarvon Castle. The original cost of building Caernarvon Castle was 27,000. The Druid Wizard, Merlin, and several prophecies, were strongly associated with Caernarvon. Merlin was believed to have been born in a cave outside Caernarvon. The name Caernarvon is believed to be derived from 'Caer Myrddin' meaning Merlin's town or fortress.
